With a starting price of roughly $20,900, a 2023 Toyota Corolla SE is more affordable than this vehicle. A reliable BEV with a cheaper starting price than an identical ICE sedan? Finally, the good times have arrived! Well, at least in China. but hopefully coming soon to a city near you.
The much-anticipated compact hatchback, the Seagull, was eventually put on sale last week by BYD, making the situation in China more fascinating. BYD has reduced the price of the Seagull from what was first stated during pre-sales, when the Seagull received 10,000 orders in just one day! The official price of the Seagull was 73,800 yuan ($10,690). It's remarkable that a small hatchback with a 30.8 kWh battery costs little under $11,000. The Seagull is part of the Ocean series, which also includes the Dolphin and the Seal, and is built on BYD's e-platform 3.0. The Seagull features a single electric motor that produces 135 Nm of torque and 75 horsepower (55 kW) of power. Front-wheel drive is used. It can go from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a peak speed of 130 km/h. Ranges of 305 km and 405 km (CLTC) are provided by the two Blade battery choices of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, respectively. The Seagull includes quick charging, which charges the battery to 80% in 30 minutes. I must say, for the price, it looks extremely excellent.
But when you contrast it with an identical brand-new ICE car, it becomes even better. The starting price for the 2023 Honda Fit 1.5L ICE is 89,800 yuan ($12,500). As a result, the BYD Seagull is already less expensive than this class of typical ICE vehicle. Check out Tycho de Feijter's further information on the ICE Honda sales data in China for a hint as to how BEV vehicles in this sector, like the Seagull, are poised to outsell ICE counterparts in terms of sales in China, the largest auto market in the world. Tycho notes that 4,250 Honda Fits were sold in China in March. These types of sales ought to be easily surpassed by the BYD Seagull.
We can see that the days we have been waiting for are finally here by comparing the features and prices of the BYD Qin Plus EV against the Toyota Corolla and, as of recently, the BYD Seagull against the Honda Fit. In addition to the environmental advantages, you had to rely on the total cost of ownership during the lifespan of the vehicles to determine whether BEVs were more expensive than identical ICE automobiles in the past. But now, in China and other regions, we are beginning to see BEVs being more affordable than comparable ICE vehicles from an outright purchase perspective. This will become increasingly prevalent in more areas throughout the world as OEMs ramp up BEV manufacturing and expand their market presence, depending on local market conditions, including import levies and taxes. The ICE era is about to end.
Interior
The BYD Seagull's interior resembles that of the Dolphin and Seal, particularly the former. Thanks to a simple design that prioritises space and aesthetics in comparison to ordinary city automobiles, the dashboard appears to be in a class by itself.
The Seagull has quilted seat coverings and a dual-tone colour scheme. The use of the colour blue in specific places of the dashboard, centre console, and door panels instantly connects the cabin with the ocean-themed design of the vehicle and gives it a more upscale appearance than other vehicles in this class.
