Ted's Quick Climb Fridays at RAF Lakenheath are always exciting but to have quick climbs at dusk was something spectacular to watch and experience. Four F-15E Strike Eagles of the 492d Fighter Squadron "Madhatters / Bolars" request quick climbs and the sun had just set, leaving the most vivid contrasting colours in the sky. Just enjoy the magical afterburners but pay close to them showing the rare blue afterburner colours.
So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.
Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!
Can pilots just do quick climbs?
No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.
RAF Lakenheath may have the title R.A.F. but it is in fact a USAF base or even more precise, a USAFE base (United States Air Forces in Europe). It has been a US Air Force base since 1948 and it is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. The wing has four combat-ready fighter squadrons; 492d, 493d, 494th and 495th Fighter Squadrons.
The 492d Fighter Squadron are a combat ready squadron and part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England. Initially activated as a Southeastern Air District Army Air Corps training squadron – the 55th Bombardment Squadron (Light) on 15 January 1941, and assigned to the 48th Bombardment Group. The unit was equipped with a variety of second-line aircraft, such as the Curtiss A-18 Shrike and Douglas A-20 Havoc, preparing its pilots and maintenance crews for eventual combat. After the Pearl Harbor Attack, the squadron flew antisubmarine patrols from March to April 1942. Resumed aircrew training, many of the group's members went on to serve in squadrons stationed in Europe and the Pacific theaters. The unit was redesignated as the 55th Bombardment Squadron (Dive) on 28 August 1942.
The 492nd assisted the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944 by dropping bombs on bridges and gun positions, attacking rail lines and trains, and providing visual reconnaissance reports. On 18 June 1944, the 492nd moved, along with the 493rd Fighter Squadron, to Deux Jumeaux Airfield, France.
On 7th November 1945, the squadron inactivated but reactivated on 10 July 1952 as the 492nd Fighter-Bomber Squadron (492nd FBS), a NATO squadron assigned to Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France. Equipped initially with Republic F-84G Thunderjets, the squadron upgraded in 1953 to North American F-86F Sabre aircraft, with the last of the Thunderjets leaving by 1954.
Then in late 1956, the squadron upgraded to the North American F-100D Super Sabre, being redesignated the 492nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (492nd TFS) on 8 July 1958. However the nuclear-weapon capable F-100 caused disagreements with France concerning atomic storage and custody issues within NATO, resulting in a decision to remove Air Force atomic-capable units from French soil. On 15 January 1960, the squadron and its host 48th TFW moved to RAF Lakenheath, UK. In the early 70's, the 492d McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II.
Redesignated as the 492nd Fighter Squadron (492nd FS) on 1 October 1991, the Bolars switched aircraft again, exchanging the F-111Fs for the McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle in early February 1992.
