Human rights activists have called on South African authorities to protect witnesses and whistleblowers if they want to win the fight against corruption. They also hope the trial of suspects in the killing of whistleblower Babita Deokaran will lead to the arrest of the mastermind behind the murder. Babita was the acting chief director of financial accounting in the Gauteng Department of Health who was killed execution-style after dropping her child at school. The Special Investigative Unit says she has been working with them successfully for the past ten years to uncover corruption in the department.
