Hi there everyone, and thanks for joining me today. I get a lot of questions from young leaders who are dealing with the challenge of their age being an issue among their employees, their peers and their boss. And so I wanted to go over a couple of techniques that any young leader can go over, or even anybody who is new to a position can go through, to gain the trust and respect of those in the workplace that surround you. The first thing you want to do is you want to explain the “why” behind your decisions. You don’t just want to give proclamations and just throw your decisions out there. You want people to understand the thought process that went into it, the reason that you are making the decision that you’re making. When they understand that you think about things logically, and they understand the thought process that you have for things, then that age issue disappears entirely. You build that trust through the “why.” The second thing that you want to do is dealing with those employees that have more experience than you, that might be older, that might have 20 years with the company or something like that. What they want most is they want that experience that they have to be valued. So you bring them into the discussion, you ask their opinion, you get information from them. Not only will they believe that you value their opinion and their experience, but you’re going to get more information, and better information to make better decisions down the road. So the two things that you want to tackle if you are a young leader and you’re worried about age being an issue, is you want to tackle the “why” behind your decisions, make sure you spend that 5, 10, 20 seconds to explain why you made the decisions you’re making. And the second thing you want to do is bring in the experienced people, bring them into your circle, understand where they’re coming from, get their opinions on things, get that information. And with those two things, you’ll be able to build that trust. Thanks so much everyone, have a great day.
