On a trip to Italy to learn more about her Jewish ancestry, Laura Cattari meets with Rabbi Barbara Aiello, who has done some genealogical research into Laura's family surnames. Rabbi Barbara shows Laura that many of those family names trace back to the days of the Spanish Inquisition, which forced Sicilian Jews to either leave the island or convert to Catholicism. The rabbi has traced these names to something called the Carini list, which is a record kept by the Inquisition of Jews who were denounced, arrested or killed.

THE MYSTERY OF SAN NICANDRO (www.themysteryofsannicandro.com) tells the story of a mass conversion to Judaism in the village of San Nicandro, in Puglia, Italy. It threads this historical conversion and the tale of its mystical leader, Donato Manduzio, with contemporary stories of converts in Calabria, Sicily, Israel and even Canada -- all of whom trace their religious roots to the once secret Jews of Southern Italy.
