Emancipation was released on November 14th 1998, Soul Sanctuary is the 3rd track on the 2nd CD.
(Headphones highly recommended)
According to Prince, THIS was the album he was born to make. He had every reason to be joyous while making Emancipation. He was recently free from any contractual restrictions and was recording in pure freedom under the symbol name. He was in love and recently married to Mayte, and had a baby boy coming soon. One can imagine the joy this brought to his life, you could see it in his face at the time, and feel it on this entire album. The second CD in particular is a testament to his love for Mayte with some truly blissful ballads.
Emancipation is 3 hours long and overflowing with purple goodness, Soul Sanctuary in particular is one of my favorite love songs from the album. One thing I always found interesting, is that with this album, Prince was now finally recording without restriction, the only person he had to answer to was himself, and now that those restrictions are lifted, he does what? He immediately restricts himself to exactly 60 minutes to the second on each of the 3 CD's :) That could not have been easy to have each CD finish on the 60 minute mark to the second. I am not one to question genius, but all I can say is, I wish he restricted it to 80 minutes per CD!
Head over to the Prince channel and queue this song up, but get that parka on, cause the chills will be comin'.
If you enjoyed this performance of Soul Sanctuary, consider sharing it with others in our purple family.
