It’s Neurodiversity celebration week and here’s why it’s important to know about it
My name’s Pip and two years ago I found out I am Autistic, ADHD and have dyscalculia.
So what is neurodiversity?
Well, being neurodivergent means having a brain that takes in information and experiences of the world that is unique from the typical expected patterns.
We think, move, process information, and communicate in different ways depending on how our brains are wired.
Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia are just some examples of neurodiversities, but they are essentially different ways of processing information.
Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference. But regardless of labels and diagnosis, neurodiversity is about recognising those who think differently.
Discovering my disabilities as an adult came with lots of learning about myself and accepting that I wasn’t broken or needed to be fixed.
And this hasn’t always been pretty, I've had to accept elements of myself that society finds less palatable or comfortable to deal with.
Things like emotional dysregulation, a need for clear communication, burnout and meltdowns are just some of the traits that neurodivergent people handle on a daily basis.
It’s important to remember that not every neurodivergent person is the same and everyone has their own challenges and strengths
However, celebrating neurodiversity can help to break down barriers and create a more inclusive world.
In the workplace, when given the right support, research shows that neurodiverse teams are 30% more productive than others.
I wouldn’t be as naturally creative and crafty as I am if I didn’t have ADHD. And I probably wouldn’t be as inquisitive as I am without being Autistic.
So although living in a world that was designed by neurotypicals comes with challenges, society benefits from different thinkers like us.
If any of this resonates with you, you aren’t alone. Did you know about Neurodiversity celebration week before?
