How long do points stay on your driving record in FL?
Thanks for asking me “How long do points stay on your driving record in FL?”
First off, what are “points” and what do they have to do with driving?
In FL the “point”system is a way of tracking and punishing drivers for being convicted of a traffic violation.
In order to get points you’ve gotta be convicted of a traffic offense. If you’re not convicted then you don’t get points. If you got a withhold of adjudication then you didn’t get points. If you’re eligible for and you complete driving school in a timely fashion, then you don’t get points. If your ticket is dismissed then there’s no points. You only get points if you’re convicted. Most traffic tickets in Fl carry 3 points, though some carry 4, some 6 and some none... but most carry 3.
In FL points stay on your license for 3 years, and that time starts to tick after you’ve been convicted and afer all of your court ordered requirements have been satisfied (for instance, after payment of fines, after court ordered traffic school has been completed, and so on).
Points are important for 2 reasons: 1) If you get enough of them in a certain period of time then you get an automatic DL suspension (12 points in 12 months earns you a 30 day Suspension; 18 Points inside of 18 months gets you a 90 day Suspension and 24 Points within a 3 years buys you a 1 Year Suspension) and 2) points get reported to insurance companies and they’re all but guaranteed to increase your premiums.
In most FL jurisdictions and for most traffic offenses points are relatively easy to avoid. Just hire a local traffic ticket defense attorney and have faith that they know the rules, the procedures, the judges and probably the cops too.
