MCT Italy's Commitment to the Sustainable Rebirth of Castelluccio di Norcia
The Bettona-based company, an international leader in the construction of concrete batching plants, will install one near the Umbrian village to make its reconstruction more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
Eight years after the earthquake of October 30, 2016, which destroyed it, the village of Castelluccio di Norcia is about to be reborn thanks to a major project involving both public and private sectors, with a total investment of 68 million euros. MCT Italy, a global player in the construction of concrete batching plants, will be one of the key players in this rebirth, thanks to the forward-thinking vision of its founder, Lamberto Marcantonini, who decided to contribute his company’s know-how and technology to the reconstruction project. MCT Italy will donate a custom-made concrete batching plant to be positioned at the Castelluccio reconstruction site, a gift not only to the inhabitants of this Umbrian village but also to all those – and they are many – who love one of the most picturesque and iconic places in the Apennines, known for its spectacular flowering that, from May to July, covers the plateau at the foot of Mount Vettore with a full spectrum of colors.
**The Project for Castelluccio**
The future of Castelluccio hinges on an innovative, one-of-a-kind project that emphasizes sustainability. It will include the creation of terraces and an earthquake-resistant concrete slab supported by 300 anti-vibration mechanical isolators, resting on another foundation slab anchored to the ground. This will allow residents to live safely and the village to regain all its authentic beauty. Among the many logistical challenges, there would have been the need to transport approximately 30,000 cubic meters of concrete from the nearest plants located over 20 km away. This would involve thousands of truck transits, with all the environmental impact consequences of transport, road durability issues, and extended work times.
"After an inspection," explains Lamberto Marcantonini, "we realized that the rock from the excavation for the slab could be partially reused for the preparation of the concrete. And so, with the plant we will set up directly within the site, we will eliminate all the negative environmental and landscape consequences of transporting large quantities of concrete. In this way, we want to give a tangible sign of the value our company places on the beauty and preservation of Umbria’s landscape resources and the well-being of the communities that interact with them."
For MCT Italy, it is a great privilege to contribute to the reconstruction of Castelluccio in full agreement and synergy with the Umbria Region and the contracting company. "Now," concludes Lamberto Marcantonini, "this wound left by the 2016 earthquake can begin to heal. There are others, but we are confident that the virtuous model adopted for Castelluccio di Norcia can be replicated elsewhere and inspire the work of institutions and many entrepreneurs who love Italy."
