Hey everyone, I filmed this walking tour of Avenida 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires on June 15 at around 2:30 PM. This walk starts at the corner of Avenida Santa Fe and Avenida 9 de Julio. I walk south until I reach Avenida Belgrano then I cross Avenida 9 de Julio and head back north toward the Avenida Corrientes. This is a distance of around 2 miles or 3.2 km.
On this walk, we'll cross the widest avenue in the world, Avenida 9 de Julio, two times. This street measures an incredible 110 meters across and contains 16 lanes of traffic. That's an entire city block wide. We'll also get an up-close view of one of Buenos Aires' most recognizable landmarks, the Obelisk. We'll also walk past the Minisry of Public Works building. During our walk, we'll pass countless restaurants, kiosks, parking garages, book stores, theaters, and all other types of businesses.
Avenida 9 de Julio is one of Buenos Aires' main thoroughfares. It is named after Argentina's independence day, July 9, 1816. At its widest point, it has 7 lanes of traffic flowing in each direction. In addition, there are two parallel streets with 2 lanes each. The Metrobus runs through the center of the avenue. Due to the width of the avenue, it takes several minutes to cross. Most pedestrians have to wait for several green lights to make it all the way across this massive street. Avenida 9 de Julio was first proposed in the late 1800s. It wasn't completed until the 1960s.
