STORYLINE:
Brazilians awoke on Monday to the news that the country's first female president had been elected.
Dilma Rousseff, 62, was elected with a 56 percent victory over Socialist Party candidate Jose Serra.
She is a career civil servant who has never held elected office, but Rousseff easily won Sunday's presidential runoff election.
Rousseff is the handpicked successor to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who currently has an 80 percent approval rating nationally.
Brasilia resident Velander Araujo said he hoped Rousseff would follow in Silva's footsteps in terms of her policies.
For Fabia Carvalho, she thinks it will be Rousseff's female ethics which will make the difference.
Rousseff is scheduled to take office on January 1.
