I just learned a simple way to measure a straight line distance in google maps.

Here's a video showing how to do it on a desktop computer.

I was able to do this in GoogleChrome and Safari. Right click on a location, select 'Measure Distance', then click another location and see the line segment and measurement. Drag that line around to see the distances.
