The Lesser Whistling Duck, also known as the Indian Whistling Duck or the Lesser Whistling Teal, is a species of waterfowl that is found in parts of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. They are part of the Dendrocygninae subfamily, which also includes the Fulvous Whistling Duck. They are relatively small ducks, measuring about 40-45 cm in length, with a wingspan of about 70-75 cm. They have a dark brown plumage, with a distinctive white patch on the cheek, and a long, dark bill.
They are found in a variety of wetland habitats, including freshwater ponds, marshes, and swamps, as well as rice paddies, and they feed on a variety of aquatic plants and animals, including seeds, roots, and aquatic insects. They are known for their distinctive, whistling call, which is given by both males and females.
Lesser Whistling Ducks are considered to be a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as they have a large range and population. However, their populations may be declining due to habitat destruction and hunting.
