The Michigan House passes legislation along party lines to require universal background checks for firearms.
Michigan’s current policy for background checks requires only federally licensed gun sellers to run a scan.
Under a universal background check law like the one being proposed in Michigan, all gun sales, regardless of the seller’s license, would lead to a background check of the buyer.
The legislation passed by the House will go to the state Senate. If approved by the Senate it will then go to Governor Whitmer for her signature.
