STORYLINE
The investigation into the case of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann continued in Portimao on Friday as a Portuguese newspaper reported that a senior Portuguese police officer said they had "nothing concrete" to implicate Madeleine McCann's parents in her disappearance.
The unnamed "high-ranking" officer in the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) - Portugal's criminal investigation department - told the 24 Horas newspaper that the evidence was not even strong enough to prove whether Madeleine is dead.
Parents Kate and Gerry McCann are facing the prospect of being charged over their daughter's disappearance after Portuguese police named them as "arguidos", or formal suspects, during questioning on September 7.
Madeleine's parents, both deny any involvement and insist police keep searching for their missing girl who disappeared more than four months ago.
They are now back in Britain waiting to learn whether they will be charged.
Meanwhile AP Television pictures on Friday showed Guilhermino Encarnacao, the National Director of Police in the Algarve, leaving after a meeting with the presiding judge on the case in Portimao, a town in southern Portugal.
An investigating judge was to begin reviewing the Portuguese police file on missing Madeleine on Wednesday, reports said, ahead of a decision on what further steps are required to determine what happened to the four-year-old.
The judge was due to say within 10 days what other action police should take to conclude the case, according to a statement from the attorney-general's office in Lisbon on Tuesday.
The legal assessment of the police findings is routine procedure.
