[Forest Green Street Music] Provins musician Claudio Quadros performs bowed vielle at the 37th Medieval Festival at Place Saint Guiriace, Provins, France on June 25, 26, 2022.
Bowed vielle is a type of bowed string instrument that emerged in the Renaissance era. It has a pear-shaped body with a short neck and is played by pressing down on the strings with the thumb and first two fingers of the hand. It has a deep, mellow sound and is played with a bow. The vielle is a member of the lute family, which includes the guitar and some other European bowed instruments. The vielle is a forerunner of the modern violin, and its name derives from "viola da gamba", the Italian word for "gambone".
Filmed by Vincent Su and Zhao Jiasheng for Forest Green Films.
