"Position before submission" is a common phrase heard on the mats.

Positional control in Judo can secure the win the match, if you are able to immobilize the opponent for 20 seconds. This is a victory via Osaekomi (pinning).

Positional control in Jiu-jitsu can be a means of scoring cumulative points while enroute to setting up submissions.

Regardless of the point scoring system, positional control is of paramount importance in every grappling sport and serve as a means to achieve a submission victory.

In this video, we demonstrate and discuss the use of Kuzure-kesa-gatame (modified scarf hold) and Mune-gatame (chest hold) as an arm lock set up for either Ude-garami (arm entanglement), Ude-hishigi-juji-gatame (arm crushing cross hold), or Waki-gatame (armpit hold). Each arm lock is based upon the opponent's reaction to the positional control.

Whether the opponent frames, pushes, or hugs, an arm lock opportunity is presented. You will be able to capitalize upon this situation, because you are already in position to set the trap.
