Kidney Stones - Early Warning Signs
Kidney stones look like small pebbles. They occur when crystal-forming substances -- such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid -- accumulate in one or both of your kidneys.
They can be tiny - like a grain of sand. Or they can be as large as a golf ball.
Even large stones don't always cause symptoms. But if one of the stones moves out of a kidney and into the tube that carries urine to the bladder (ureter), severe pain can strike. This pain tends to occur in the area known as the "flank," or lower back and side just below the ribs
Before pain strikes, there are some early warning signs that indicate you may have kidney stones. They include one or more of the following.
the following.
* Discomfort pain during urination -- especially a stinging sensation.
* Urinating more often and in smaller amounts than usual
* Pink, red or brown urine
* Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
* Urinating more often than usual
* Persistent, sometimes urgent feeling that you have to urinate, even when the output is small
If you have a family history of kidney stones, talk to your doctor about tests he or she can do to see if you have kidney stones before symptoms begin to appear.
