As part of Barnard College's Summer Research Institute, Livia Martinez '21 is conducting scientific research at the New York Botanical Gardens. She is focusing on extracting DNA from plants to study chloroplast inheritance. Her work can help in the understanding of plant genetics and how it relates to agriculture production. SRI, inaugurated in 2014, sponsored 187 Barnard students this summer to conduct full time scientific research in labs at Barnard, Columbia University, and across New York City.
