ST. JOHN AMBULANCE CHARITY BACKGROUND:
St. John Ambulance is a worldwide non-denominational, international charity which provides first aid, health care and support services in over 40 countries. Together, we make up the Order of St. John, which is accredited to the United Nations. The Order’s charitable work is carried out by the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and over 40 national St. John Ambulance Priories worldwide. In Canada, the first St. John Ambulance Branch was established in 1883 in Quebec City.

St. John Ambulance York Region Branch, established in 1991, serves the nine municipalities in York Region just above the city of Toronto, Ontario. We provide community support through our four Medical First Responder Units whose volunteers treated 304 patients at 205 events last year; our four Therapy Dog Units whose 172 therapy dogs and handlers made 5,863 visits to 427 facilities, schools and workplaces; our four Youth Units whose 242 children and youth volunteers participated in our cadet program, learning first aid and leadership; and our Child Car Seat Safety Unit whose hard-working volunteers inspected 204 child car seats at 13 car seat safety clinics.

In addition, we also stand ready to assist at major events and support regional emergency management including the 2013 Special Olympics, December 2013 Ice Storm, 2015 Pan and ParaPan American Games, and the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. In 2019, our 639 volunteers provided 67,517 hours of volunteer time to the community.
