Iraqis geared up Saturday (23/3) for their largest parliamentary elections as they struggled under the crippling effects of a
five-year international economic embargo. Iraq is taking only a calculated risk in allowing candidates officially deemed to be independent to take part in the polls as, if elected, they will be on the outside of a one-party state that has total control of the country.
