Setting: Israel is afraid of God, but He is teaching
them not to sin now that they are His people. (20:18-21)
In Exodus 20:22-23:19, God tells Israel:
1. To worship how God says (20:22-26)
Values: simplicity, purity, decentralization, sacrifice
2. To treat others respectably (
21:1-32)
Values: liberty, sanctity of life, conduct
3. To live accountable (21:33-22:15)
Values: restitution, remedying wrongs
4. To contribute to communal justice and holiness (22:16-23:9)
Values: human dignity, mercy, compassion
5. To honor, love, and celebrate Yahweh (23:10-19)
Values: remembrance, personal and communal devotion
