Ever had banana leaves turning brown or turn crisp after a few days? Here’s a tip to store them for long for all your lovely banana leaf based dishes.
Steps are simple :
1️⃣ Wash well, cut the leaf such that the middle part is removed.
2️⃣ Place it on fire and move it around so every part of the leaf comes in contact with the fire. In Malayalam this is called ‘vaatal’, not sure what the English word for it is
3️⃣ Just store it in a bag in the fridge and that’s it :)
Ellayappam is a Kerala delicacy, it’s basically a steamed dumpling with a sweet filling made in banana leaf , there are variations of this recipe in most southern states of Bharat. And they’re so yummy!
Ellayappam recipe
🥟 Take 2 cups of rice flour, add salt to it & mix well.
🥟 Add in boiling water to the mixture & mix with a spoon to form a chapathi like dough. Let the dough rest for 10 mins.
🥟 Make the filling with grated coconuts, jaggery, cardamom (you can even add sliced banana or jackfruit for added flavour)
🥟 Take a portion of the rice flour dough & spread it as thinly as possible onto the banana leaf, this can be done easily by occasionally wetting your hands.
🥟 Now add the filling & fold the banana leaf into two such that one end of the flour sticks to the other, thereby closing the filling inside.
🥟 Steam this until the banana leaf can be easily separated from the dough on both sides & enjoy hot hot😍
