With 5 more deaths, the number of fatalities due to flash floods in Odisha has gone up to 12. Over 4 lakh people in 10 districts of the state have been affected due to heavy rain. Officials said that fear of flood looms large in the Mahanadi river system following heavy rainfall and a rise in the water level of Hirakud Dam. Forty of the 64 sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam were opened by the authorities on Friday to discharge excess water. Many other rivers are in spate submerging low-lying areas and snapping road connectivity.
