In 2015, Germany was one of Europe's most generous countries towards asylum-seekers but as Germany began to struggle with the influx of migrants, anti-immigration sentiment rose. Partly in response, Chancellor Angela Merkel has begun dissuading asylum-seekers from coming to Germany. Her government also pushed hard for an EU agreement, signed on October 2 2016, with Afghanistan that allows member states to deport an unlimited number of Afghans back home.
