SUZURU or SOKAKU (Godan Sugomori) / TANIGUCHI, Yoshinobu
A piece of the highest level difficulty among the Koden Honkyoku
works, depicting the life cycle of a crane; its arrival by flight,
courtship, nesting, laying eggs, brooding, growth, fluttering of the
wings, and fledging, by using sound patterns unique to the shakuhachi.
There are about ten different types of piece called “Tsuru no
Sugomori,” of which Godan Sugomori divides the crane’s cry into 5
types which are played differently depending on the scene.
As an aside, parent cranes in order to encourage fledging will
decrease the amount of feed and frequently peck the young birds into
independence. Some parent cranes abandon the young birds into
independence.
