Women in mining at Glencore: Peita Heffernan is one of our women truck drivers at a Glencore mine in Australia. She talks about how much satisfaction she gets from her job and how much fun it is…
With a previous background in finance, Peita’s been driving in Glencore mines since 2010 and is now a trainer-assessor: she loves working with the large machinery associated with the mining industry and the idea that she’s contributing directly to Australia’s economy.
We’re committed to diversity and equality, and are continually looking to expand our jobs for women in the mines. Our industrial operations have many initiatives in place to encourage and support women in traditional and non-traditional roles.
In 2012, we launched an initiative in Chile called Mujeres a la Carga ("women in the driving seat"), which seeks to increase the number of female operators on our heavy equipment teams. This is a programme of training, mentoring and on-the-job learning which attracted 20 local women in 2012.
