I'm about 30+ hours into Anthem at the moment, with friends who have played significantly more than I have. So, how is it? First impressions? Worth it? These are pre-day-1-patch, but I'll explain in the video. Very nervous about this video, we'll see how it goes. I tried to have a somewhat positive outlook on the future while really highlighting the problems I have.
These are just some final thoughts I have before this thing goes live, it's about 2:30am. Anthem isn't there yet. It's not. But, Bioware seems on top of things. Big wave of fixes coming on the 22nd. An update in March. Strong presence in the community so far. So, things are looking up. Anthem isn't completely hopeless or anything. It's competent and shows plenty of signs of life. But it ain't there yet. It is not as smooth as of an experience as I was hoping and there are too many things getting in the way of me having fun. I am more frustrated than I am having fun when playing Anthem at this time.
I'm going to mention end game in the video and right now. You might say "how are you in the end game already?" Because there is no mid game. If you beat the campaign, you're in end game. The mid game is getting to level 30 and once you're there and get a full set of epic gear, which is really easy to do, congrats, you're in the end game. The end game is farming masterwork items. You can get gear anywhere though, contracts, strongholds, missions, hell I got a masterwork from a random trash mob. But you know how in Destiny 2 how farming public events was the fastest and best way to level and how it was really boring and stale? Yeah, Anthem decided to take a page out of that book, where world questing on GM1 might be the best way to level. GM2/3 are way overtuned for the rewards they give. To really get a fully optimized set of gear will take hundreds of hours. But are you gonna be bothered to play for that long? Do you like the gameplay enough to do that? Because for me, I enjoy Destiny's gameplay enough to do it. For Anthem, I'm not too sure.
You know how The Taken King had the Taken War as the post-campaign mid game and it was pretty good? Anthem's answer to a 3 and a half year old project was to get you to level 30, do world quests disguised as contracts and give you a really long, grindy quest that leads to another really long, grindy quest. One of the strongholds is so hard on GM1 that I know of a team that spent an hour trying to kill JUST THE FINAL BOSS. The end game spread of activities is currently weak. A new thing is coming in Mach. Hopefully its good.
As I say in the video, the thing that will get you into this game is purely if you enjoy the combat. I think that's it. Destiny, Anthem, Division, Warframe, all pretty samey when it comes to being looter shooters, all drastically different when it comes to the gameplay. Once you've played a looter shooter, you've played them all in terms of gaining loot, activities, objectives, all of that. People pick their game based on how much they like the gameplay. Anthem doesn't innovate on non-gameplay related things, not at launch at least.
I am just really tired of trying to cover these looter shooters and eventually discovering that it'll take 3-6 months minimum before things click. My patience is running out. That's probably a really dick thing to say, but after this long on Youtube, this many bad or less than stellar launches, on top of the 3 failed side projects I've attempted, my patience is running out. I think I am just fatigued on looter shooters. I've done this already. 3 other times. The gameplay is good, but I've done this already, that's the feeling I'm getting.
I couldn't pinpoint where Anthem lands in between Destiny 1, 2 and Division 1 launches. Destiny had a content problem, but the gameplay was really solid. Anthem sort of has a content problem and a gameplay problem. I don't know. I think Anthem will get better faster than Destiny and Division did though, based on how Bioware is handling the launch. But we'll see. I don't know how much content I'll end up doing on Anthem because outside of build videos, (which will take a lot of time to do because getting masterwork+ gear that's actually good is really rare) there's not a lot to discuss other than state of the game style stuff. I'll see what I can do. But my enthusiasm to make content for Anthem is not very high at this time.
