Did you know...
If you don't know what mutations you'll get in your Cockatiel chicks, and you don't know how to use a genetics calculator, the color of the crest is one indication of what colors a baby Cockatiel will develop! It will also guide you towards what mutation they are.
Combine that with the color of the down (initial baby fluff/feathers), and the color of their eyes, and you've got a pretty good idea of what they will look like 😊
Pictured (4 of my 2021 babies):
White crest + white down + black eyes = baby Whiteface Pied
Gray crest + yellow down + black eyes = baby Normal Gray
Yellow crest + yellow down + black eyes = baby Natural Pied
Yellow crest + yellow down + red eyes = baby Lutino
This is not a scientifically proven method. These are some quick visual tips used by breeders to identify the chicks before selling. 100 percent mutation identification can be done only after one or two molting of the cockatiel feathers.
Cockatiels started with a normal grey colour, and then mutations began popping up because of specific breeding. The first mutations that occurred were pieds, cinnamons, Lutinos and pearl cockatiels. The next mutations to occur were white-faces, silvers and albinos. Recently, an orange-crested cock with orange cheek patch extending into the face and crest has occurred; this is a newly discovered mutation.
