Tanks backed by hundreds of troops guarded central Jakarta on Wednesday (20/05), maintaining an uneasy calm, as a Moslem leaders called off a planned mass protest fearing bloodshed and students occupied parliament for a third day. However, the square, in which the Monas national monument stands, was deserted in the morning, encircled by concertina barbed wire, with the inner perimeter manned by helmeted troops with assault rifles, armoured personnel carriers and light tanks. At the parliament in a different part of the city, some 7,000 students were occupying the complex for the third day after a tense all-night vigil. The Muslim leader Amien Rais, who has backed the students' call for an end to Suharto's 32-year rule, urged protestors not to rally at the Monas monument but to stay at home and pray.
