Aiptasia anemones are unfortunately part of the aquarium reef keeping hobby. These anemones are generally a hitchhiking pest that are not welcome by most hobyists. If you spend any amount of time doing this hobby, then at some point or another you are going to run across aiptasia anemones. These guys find their way into our aquariums by hitchhiking on live rock, corals, and frag plugs. It is very important to quarantine every fish and piece of coral before introducing it into your main system. If you are not able to set up a quarantine system, then it is even more important to inspect each piece of coral and dip it in a reef safe dip before introduction into the system. Aiptasia anemones are ugly, super fast growers, and have the ability to damage your corals with their stinging capabilities. There are a lot of methods out there on getting rid of these pests. You can inject them with lemon juice, super hot R.O.D.I. water, or try to get things like peppermint shrimp that may eat them. Every method has its pros and cons just like everything else in this hobby. In one of our other videos we even experimented killing aiptasia with a high powered hand held laser. There is one method that I have used over the years that I have had the most success with. That method is using Aiptasia X. Aiptasia X is a form of sodium hydroxide that you place on the oral disk of the aiptasia anemone. The anemone will ingest the solution and it will effectively kill it. One issue with these anemones is that they reproduce by releasing individual cells into the water column. If you just irritate the anenome and don't completly kill it, you may make your problem worse. If you notice any of these anemones in your aquarium, it is very important to get rid of them as soon as possible before they have the chance to spread. Aiptasia X has been used in the hobby for years and I have never had it damage any corals. I believe it to be safe if it is used as instructed. With that said, take care not to directly inject it onto any of your corals. When I use it I will shut off all flow to the aquarium and leave it off for 15 to 20 minutes after application. If you have any question on how to use aiptasia X, be sure to send me a direct message or leave them in the comments below and I will do my best to get back with you.
