A rally held at Tel-Aviv University marking the 76th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba was met with counter protests by right wing Israelis that escalated to attacks leading Israeli police to intervene.
The protest was approved by the university following High Court intervention but students were banned from raising Palestinian flags, leading protesters to raise watermelon placards in the place of Palestinian flags.
The protest commemorating the Nakba was organised by students from the leftist Hadash political party which calls for recognition of Palestinian Arabs as a national minority within Israel.
