A look at the class 455 electric multiple unit seen at a variety of locations around the south of London on Saturday 2nd April 2022. In just over a months time they will be withdrawn from service following the timetable change planned for early May 2022 so I thought I would take the opportunity to try and capture footage of these trains before they are gone for good.
The class 455 can presently be found working suburban stopping services out of London Victoria and London Bridge to destinations such as Beckenham Junction, Sutton, West Croydon, Epsom Downs, Coulsdon Town and Dorking so in this video I visited Beckenham Junction, Crystal Palace, Norwood Junction and Sutton. I also took some footage of a ride onboard between Crystal Palace and Norwood Junction to show the interior as well as the exterior.
The class 455 can also be found operating South Western Railway stopping services from London Waterloo and it is the intention to replace the units on those routes within the next couple of years also.
The class 455 was built by BREL between 1982 and 1985 and therefore, makes them some of the oldest trains to be found on regular passenger services in the United Kingdom.
