Tarkwa Bay is an enclosed beach located near the Lagos Harbour in Nigeria. Due to its island status, it is only accessible by boat or water taxis. It was home to more than 10,000 residents who are now homeless thanks to the Nigerian Government who forcibly evicted women and their children without any warning or legal proceedings.
The eviction took place on Tuesday, January 21st, 2020. Residents described scenes of panic and confusion as Nigerian Navy fired shots in the air, giving the residents just an hour to gather their belongings and vacate the island.
When Commander Thomas Otuji was interviewed he said “They build houses on oil pipelines and pump illegally,...all the people in the community aren’t vandals but if you don’t report it, you are part of it.”
In this video, we follow some of the local residents before the eviction as they show us a day in their life and share some of their aspirations which are now derailed.
