The ecological balance in the seas around the UK is meant to be safeguarded by a series of 'Marine Protected Areas' which are special conservation zones designed to protect habitats.

But the environmental pressure group Greenpeace has warned that destructive fishing practices are widespread.

On World Ocean Day, the government is announcing a scheme to ban all activities that damage marine life, but activists says the plans would leave vast swathes of oceans dangerously unprotected.
