Cathie Wood of Ark Innovation looked like a genius in 2020 as her innovation focus fund rose 120% in 12 months, only to give back every penny of those gains afterward. In our opinion, her prediction that innovation forces would be a powerful driver this decade has been proven to be absolutely correct. What we said at the time was that she drastically underestimated how much involvement from federal regulators and a terrible macroeconomic environment would affect her portfolio.

The Fed's focus on inflation, she feels, is misplaced. The bigger worry should be deflation in the medium and long term which could cause a massive economic downturn if left unchecked. She believes that inflation is a bigger worry at the moment because it would cause short-term economic problems (like rising prices), but deflation would cause long-term economic problems (like falling wages and prices). Rising prices are already causing short-term problems, so there's no reason why they would suddenly become acceptable if they were caused by deflation instead of inflation. She feels that the U.S. economy needs a tighter monetary policy because it will reduce unemployment, lower interest rates, and increase spending.
