Maintaining the health, safety, and wellbeing of our falcons is our primary concern and focus. Having the properly fitted equipment is one of the easiest steps a falconer to protect their animals. Today we’re changing out some old Jesses and Bracelets on Fig our Alti-Saker falcon. We check the birds daily, basically a mini-physical. We focus on the feet; we look at their talons to make sure they’re not too long, too pointy, too skinny, or broken. We’ll trim them as needed. A risk of having talons too long or sharp is the bird could injure themselves. Then we move to the pads on the bottom of the foot. Lastly, we check the furniture. Being an organic material, the leather will breakdown over time. It's just like the leash and collar on a dog, its there to help keep the animal safe.

Welcome, today we’re going to show you how to build furniture for falcons. Not this type... But this type! We’re starting with a beautiful piece of cowhide. You can’t even see the grains it's that nice! We’re making new jesses. We’ll start by marking the hide at 0.4 inches It’s important to make three marks so, there are no bows or thin spots. A rotary cutter helps to mitigate the possibility of thin spots. This measurement is also 0.4 inches. Folding the leather to that mark and over again giving us 3 layers. The 3 layers will make a very secure “button” that you will see later. Punching this hole bias towards the top, so all 3 sides are even. This will make a prettier knot. [Annoyed] Yes, my cutters are OLD and TIRED… This end will go through the hole we just made and cutting it at a diagonal will make it easier to feed through. This leather is called “Kip”. It’s thinner than what we made the jesses out of and very soft. The width of this is half-inch, marking the center from both sides to we are really centered. Same measurement for the top. We’ve been making bracelets for 5 decades now. So, we have our standard sizing. This is a #1 size, which is our most common size. Used mainly on our medium-sized hawks and falcons (500g-700g). This is critical, I have the length then got the top and bottom aligned. This will hide any inconsistencies I noticed most people find this step kinda odd. I found that using the crimpers will make the end of the bracelets radiused and beautiful. And... Wait for it... Dang near perfect. A little sanding so you don’t have any rough edges. [Proudly] Look at that! OK, this is Jesse Grease. This has been heated in the microwave for a minute ensuring the grease is melted and very hot. Dipping the furniture into the grease, and leaving it in the jar to ensure there are no more bubbles. That means the leather is fully saturated. The grease does solidify fairly quickly. We have to have through the next few briskly. Now you can see the “button” I was talking about earlier. It's important to keep the sides aligned as much as possible. Now you can see where the bias from the original hole lands perfectly in the center? Making it symmetric. This is just an iron worker’s guide I’m using to flare out the ends. Doing so makes it more comfortable for the bird. This is the #1 bracelets [facepalms self] Which is actuarially too small for Fig. I made a larger set of the #2 pairs off-screen. The FINAL product! the Aylmeri bracelets and jesses. Time to put them on Fig. Fig in all his glory, he’s a tiercel Alti-Saker Falcon who's looking good with his new furniture. [VERY silly voice] Such a handsome little man. Thank you for joining us. If you like what you saw and heard please “like”, “subscribe” and hit the Not… [SPLAT], [laughing] Animals and kids... I'm telling you...
