Born on July 14, 1918, in Toledo, Ohio, Baur graduated from the University of Toledo and later earned his master's and PhD degrees at Ohio State University1. He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation physiologist before pursuing a food storage technology career.
In 1966, while working for Procter & Gamble, Baur developed the tubular packaging for Pringles, which allowed the chips to be stacked uniformly and stay fresh longer. Baur's dedication to his invention was so profound that he requested to be buried in a Pringles can, a wish his family honored upon his death in 2008.
