On May 1st, 1982, the RAF’s opening strikes in the Falklands War commenced! The objective was to wipe out the Port Stanley runway so that the Argentinians couldn't use it to attack the Royal Navy task force. The Argentine Army's primary anti-aircraft artillery battalion, stationed atop Sapper Hill, kept watch for the British bombers as they approached. Four Oerlikon 35mm cannons followed the target's coordinates inputted into the computer. Because the aircraft could be a friendly Hercules C-130, their fire mission was canceled. Meanwhile, by using ECM, the Argentine air defenses were rendered completely ineffective at a distance of just four miles by the bombers. The automatic bomb release dropped twenty-one bombs at 2-mile intervals. Vulcan was 3 miles away and traveling at 440 miles per hour when the first bomb went off. Twenty more bombs hit the area near the tents where the troops were sheltering as the first bombs blew up the runway. They were unable to protect themselves from the shock waves with their wooden barriers, and a vessel carrying military gear waiting to enter Stanley Harbour was also struck by the shockwaves.
