BROXTOWE PARISH #8: BRINSLEY

Brinsley – “Brun’s Clearing”

With three to go in Broxtowe, today we come to Brinsley, another village of the Erewash valley with coal mining close to its heart. Situated just West of the Brinsley brook and right on the border with Derbyshire, Brinsley was famous for its headstocks, that once belonging to the local colliery. Tall and proud they stood here until late last year, when they were dismantled, sparking widespread outrage across the district, especially in former mining circles.

Brinsley Colliery opened in around 1842 it closed as a working pit in 1934 when the seams were exhausted, but its shafts were kept open until 1970 for access to neighbouring mines. Brinsley once producing 500 tons of coal a day, employing 361 men – and among them was Arthur John Lawrence. He was the father of the famous author DH Lawrence, who would reference the mine in his short story Odour of Chrysanthemums, and in his 1913 novel Sons and Lovers, where the colliery is referred to instead as Beggarlee.

The headstocks also appear in the opening scenes of the 1960 film adaptation of the book, which won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Even though the headstocks are now gone, mining is still what Brinsley is all about.
