Laparoscopic surgery or minimal invasive surgery or keyhole surgery. It is the state of the art technology for doing most of the gynecological surgery in today’s era. But is it safe? If it is done by a surgeon with proper expertise, and done in a facility with adequate infrastructure. So we follow a lot of patient safety measures which actually help to make the laparoscopic surgery very safe, right from the entry into the abdominal cavity which we od under vision or following basic measures like minimal use of electro surgery or cautery during surgery and ensuring that there is complete hemostasis during surgery. There are also certain other measures we follow which actually make these laparoscopic surgery very safe. From a surgeons point of view, it requires a lot of expertise and skill, a longer training period. But it offers a lot of benefits to the patient like the whole surgery is done with a 5 to 10 mm wounds compared to that of a 10 cms cut that you have with a traditional open surgery. It offers other advantages like less bleeding during surgery and in the post-operative period the patient recovers faster because there are smaller wounds, less pain, patient is able to go back the same day or most probably the next day. So faster recovery and shorter hospital stay. So it also reduces on the costing that happens to the patient. Initially when we hear the costing with the procedure it may seem a bit more but what happens with a laparoscopic surgery is that it is cost effective. If you look at the stay in the hospital and the additional burden that is associated, and in terms of faster recovery that is happening, it happens to be a much more cost effective procedure. So in that way laparoscopic surgery is very safe.
