Howard County Executive Ken Ulman today joined representatives of Kimco Realty and the Wilde Lake community to break ground for a $17-million-dollar redevelopment of the Wilde Lake Village Center.
The project is expected to take two years. It includes the extensive renovation of the shopping center's existing buildings, walkways, courtyard and thoroughfares. Additionally, a 13,000 square foot CVS drug store will be constructed and David's Natural Market will be relocated to a larger space inside a new building. A 24,000 square foot space formerly occupied by GIANT and vacant since 2006 will be demolished to provide visual access to the courtyard area and to improve pedestrian and vehicular circulation.
The redeveloped center will contain 63,000 square feet of retail space, 30,000 square feet of office space, and 250 residential apartments built directly adjacent to the Village Center. Kimco has selected Wood Partners to build two, five-story apartment buildings, along with a multi-level parking garage.
The redevelopment project will be built to LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a standard measure of building sustainability. It will also significantly improve the overall stormwater management facilities within the existing property boundary.
Wilde Lake is one of eight villages in the planned community of Columbia. The Wilde Lake Village Center was built in 1967.
