There is a rule that photographers use to line up their shots called the Two Thirds Rule, which is illustrated in the squares across the top of this page.
These are each example of the correct amount of grid that should be occupied by the subject.
An imaginary 3x3 grid is placed over the photo and if the subject takes up more or less than 2/3 of the grid, then it needs to be adjusted.
