Cefalù is an Italian city located in Sicily at about 70km from Palermo. It’s set on the northern coast of the island, in fact one of its peculiarity is the beauty of its Mediterranean landscapes.
It hasn’t a lot of inhabitants, in fact its population is about 14000 people, but in one year it guests about 130000 tourists, thanks at its historically important places (like the Cathedral or the Cloister, that are UNESCO heritage); we can also find beaches and cliffs.
We can’t forget traditions and costumes.
Coming to Cefalù is impossible to not see the little mountain that dominates the city, called Rocca, that’s high just under 300 metres and it’s full of vegetation.
On the top we can find an ancient Norman castle and the famous Temple of Diana’s ruins; the Temple of Diana maybe was dedicated to the Roman’s god of the house. It was built with megalithic technique in the V century B.C.
From the top we can see the beautiful panorama of the gulf, that arrives at Palermo.
The most important monument of Cefalù is without doubt the Cathedral, an Arabic-Norman structure built in the XII century, located in the heart of the historic centre. The legend says that it was built by the King Roger II of Sicily, that made a holy vow at the “Santissimo Salvatore” of making this church for having run off a terrible storm. The real motivation, thanks to the strategic location of the city, was of military and politic nature.
Rather than a normal church, from the outside it appears like a fortress, but in the inside, we can find the beautiful mosaic of the Christ Pantocrator, made by Byzantine artisans, also with golden tiles.
Another important monument in the City is the Medieval wash, also located in the historic centre.
For arriving there you must go down a stair made of “Lumachella”, that’s a type of local stone made of little marine fossils.
The wash is made of a series of tubs with water that arrives from the “Rio Cefalino” river and goes in the sea.
The Mandralisca’s museum in the only museum in the city. Inside we can find a large cultural heritage, collected, thanks to his love for art, by “Enrico Pirajino di Mandralisca”.
The museum keeps a collection of archaeological rests, coins, paintings, a rich collection of shells and an important library.
The most important works inside the museum are the “Ritratto di un uomo” (a 15th century olio on canvas painting, made by Antonello da Messina, that represents an unknown man, whose identity is under investigation), and the “Cratere Siceliota” (a 4th century BC vase with red figures on a black background, representing a tuna vendor)
