At the Defense Information School, military public affairs journalists learn how to create engaging short form documentaries.
To keep their skills sharp, one team of instructors set out to accomplish the same assignment they require theirr students to complete: a 2-4 minute non-narrative doc-style video on a subject of their choosing in the local area. They used all the same equipment and were under the same time-constraints and criteria to finish the product on a deadline.
MSgt Nicholas Kurtz documented their efforts and crafted this behind-the-scenes video to be shown to students as an instructional aide, revealing the process of creating a documentary video from scratch.
