This model of makita recip saw has a built in torque limiter, that allows the motor to slip if the blade hits something solid. This way there is No risk of smashing gear teeth. The torque limit can sometimes ware or slacken of over time.
it is possible to remove it and tighten the compression nut on top, to prevent the limiter from slipping then cutting.
If this fails the torque limiter will need to be replaced.
