Northern Territory Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro says the chief minister’s suggestions of hard borders and indefinite closures in the lead up to an election are “reckless and irresponsible”.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said his government was looking at an 18 month window for “hard border controls”.
Ms Finocchiaro said the chief minister’s comments come as his “political career is on the line” given the proximity to the election on August 22.
“What he’s done in those comments is used words like hard borders and indefinite closures which has really scared people in the territory,” she told Sky News.
“Some tough talk at election time just further shows how low this government will go to stoop to use the pandemic for political advantage.”
