(16 Mar 2020) As Italy remained in a far-reaching lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, Romans took to their balconies on Monday and moved to the beat of Domenico Codugno's 1950s classic "Volare", or "To Fly".
Promptly at 6 pm (1700 GMT), a number of residents emerged to sing together and lift collective spirits.
In the Magliana neighborhood of Rome, the song was followed by the Italian national anthem.
In another area, a popular doorman took up his new post - as musical 'conductor'.
Donning a mask and gloves, he once again led his condominium in the daily singalong.
On Monday, Italy's Civil Protection authorities announced that deaths were up by 349, bringing the total of 2,158.
According to official figures, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country is 27,980.
Most of the deaths have occured among Italians in their 80s.
Twenty-three percent of Italy's population is over 65.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover.
The government has declared a lockdown for the entire country allowing people to leave their homes only to shop for food or go to the pharmacy.
