In this pinch pot tutorial, I go over how to make a simple pinch pot using air dry clay. This is an easy, beginner-friendly art lesson that introduces clay handbuilding in a simple way. I have used this method with elementary art students (3rd through 5th grade) with consistently great results. This method works for children as well as adult beginners with minimal clay experience. For this art lesson, we are using air dry clay. With air dry clay, there is no need for a kiln or specialized tools so it is great for beginners and young children. This step-by-step pinch pot video will explain how to make a pinch pot clearly!
To complete simple pinch pots, you must first turn your lump of clay into a ball and then create a depression in the middle of it. From there, you will use a pinching motion with your hand to shape your pinch pot. Any cracks that appear on the surface of your pinch pot can be smoothed out using tiny bits of water and light pressure. Don't forget to level out your pot by trimming it with a clay tool or by tapping it lightly on your tabletop (the method used in the video since it doesn't require any additional clay tools).
During this clay pinch pot tutorial, I also demonstrate how to shape your pinch pots into different shapes (such as a square pinch pot or a heart-shaped pinch pot).
NOTE: In this video, I recommend that the pinch pot's side walls be as thick as a pencil. With pinch pots the walls can be much thinner....however, when I use Crayola Air Dry Clay I make the recommendation of the thicker walls since my student's pots often crack when they are thinner than that. Just a note for any beginner's out there working on your first pinch pot....the walls should ideally be thinner.
