Sikhism is a monotheistic religion that originated in the 15th century in the Indian subcontinent. It was founded by Guru Nanak, and its teachings are recorded in the sacred scripture called the Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism emphasizes devotion to one God, equality of all human beings, and living a truthful and honest life.
Sikhs follow the teachings of the ten Sikh Gurus, with Guru Nanak being the first and Guru Gobind Singh the last human Guru. The central tenets of Sikhism include the importance of selfless service (seva), meditation on God's name (simran), and the pursuit of honest livelihood.
The Sikh identity is often characterized by the "Five Ks": Kesh (uncut hair), Kara (steel bracelet), Kanga (wooden comb), Kachera (cotton undergarments), and Kirpan (ceremonial sword). The ultimate goal in Sikhism is to attain union with God and lead a life of righteousness.
